To celebrate our signed Abels collection giveaway, here’s a look at one of our favourite Abels to bag: Mt Field West, one of five peaks in Mount Field National Park classified as an Abel.

The Abels list, created in the early 1990s by Tasmanian bushwalker Bill Wilkinson, was inspired by Scotland’s famed Munros. “I went over to Scotland a couple of times,” Wilkinson recalls, “and there was a fella who was effectively climbing all the Munros. I went around with him and climbed a number over a few days.” After returning to Tasmania, he wondered, “Could that work here?” Three years later, after time spent “chilling things over” and carefully checking heights and drops, Wilkinson had identified 160 peaks to inspire local adventurers. “The reason I decided on 1100m is that virtually every peak then gives you a view,” he says. “So, you’re not climbing 980m-high scrubby peaks and saying, ‘I got to the top, but you can’t see anything.’”

The 7-hour Mount Rufus circuit is located about 2.5 hours from Launnie, and while it can be challenging, well-prepared walkers are rewarded with breathtaking mountain views in every direction once they reach the summit ✨

There’s plenty of truth to the bushwalkers’ saying: "After three days of 17-degree weather in a row, you'll start to see snakes!" 🐍 So it's time to start being snake-aware, especially in places like Narawntapu National Park, which we think is the snakiest spot in Tassie! Where do you think is the snakiest spot?

We've got plenty of snake bite kits and bandages in store and online to keep you safe if you don't have one already. They're designed with special indicators to ensure the right compression to slow venom progression — being prepared is always key! 🏞️🦎

P.S This photo was captured on a sunny day, ideal for the trek's steep sections and boulder scrambling. @tasmaniaparks recommends only attempting Barn Bluff in fine weather. So add this one to your upcoming spring/summer bucket list! 🥾

While frost is pretty annoying when it comes to your car windscreen it’s pretty impressive in places like this. We actually think this walk is best experienced when the waterfall freezes between June and August, so rug up and hit the trails for this 5-6 hour trek located an hour from Launnie 🥾
